For 20 years, the attacks by illegal gold mining on biodiversity, natural habitats, health and the living environment of the inhabitants of French Guiana have been considerable, in particular for the populations and ecosystems of the south of the territory. The gendarmerie, the armed forces and, in general, all the actors involved in illegal gold mining, are intervening in a coordinated manner within the framework of Operation Harpie in an attempt to reverse this phenomenon.

This year, the Amazonian Park of French Guiana obtained, under the national strategy of protected areas, additional financial resources to intensify the fight on its territory. This funding has enabled the Amazonian Park to have used helicopters since May to conduct airborne missions, which are the most effective way to surprise illegal miners on the sites.

Within the workforce of the Amazonian Park, the specialized "nature police" team has 15 environmental inspectors, commissioned and armed. Depending on the sector, the Amazonian Park can either intervene alone or intervene jointly with the military and / or the gendarmes.

Last month, it was in close coordination between the Amazonian Park and the gendarmerie that two operations were carried out on the Lipo Lipo site, a high priority sector because it is located upstream of the Amerindian villages of Cayodé and Antecume pata (municipality of Maripa-Soula), on November 19 and 30.

Conducted in a logic of harassment of garimpeiros, these operations mobilized each time a helicopter chartered by the national park with 5 environmental inspectors on board and 2 other helicopters chartered by the gendarmerie (Operation Anaconda led by the GIGN branch ).

In the space of 15 days, 15 engines, 2 crushers (hoisted and dropped off at Maripa-soula for subsequent destruction), mercury and many materials were taken from the garimpeiros.

In this same sector, a special effort mobilizing the resources of the gendarmerie and the Amazonian Park also made it possible to bring several illegal gold miners to justice. Between July and September, 5 garimpeiros arrested in flagrante delicto of untitled mining in Lipo Lipo were removed from the forest and taken into police custody. The sentences handed down by the trial court following the gendarmerie investigation were 2 years in prison for one of them and 1 year for the 4 others. Each time, the Amazonian Park has taken action.

The programming of these exceptional operational resources will continue in 2022 and 2023 with the aim of reducing the footprint of illegal gold mining in the south of French Guiana on a lasting basis.
