Exposition : Watau, les chemins de la mémoire

Du 12 au 25 janvier dans les communes du Haut-Maroni

Entre le 12 et le 24 janvier 2020, une exposition itinérante sur panneaux en wayana et français produite par le musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac en partenariat avec le musée des cultures guyanaises, présentera dans le Haut Maroni le projet SAWA et le portail Watau.fr.

Intitulée « WATAU. EITOPONPË EHEMA, Wayana me, Apalai me eitop internet jau/WATAU, les chemins de la mémoire, Un site internet pour les Wayana et Apalai », l’exposition est composée de 17 panneaux, répartis en trois sections qui présentent à la fois le projet SAWA et le portail, des objets des deux musées, et le grand rituel eputop (maraké en français).

Le commissariat est assuré par Mataliwa Kuliyaman, Tasikale Alupki, Ikale Asaukili, Pekijem Kulitaike, Yamo Kutaka, Akayuli Palanaiwa ; les conseillères scientifiques sont Fabienne de Pierrebourg (musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac) et Marie-Paule Jean-Louis.

Le projet SAWA, Savoirs autochtones wayana et apalaï (2016 – 2019) a été mené dans le cadre du Labex Les passés dans le présent. Il est conduit par le Laboratoire d’ethnologie et de sociologie comparative (CNRS et Université Paris – Nanterre) et le musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.  Il a aussi bénéficié du concours de la Direction des affaires culturelles de Guyane, de la Collectivité territoriale de Guyane, de la délégation générale à la langue française et aux langues de France, du Ministère des Outre-mer, de « I’association pour le dialogue interculturel : recherche et action », et de l’association AGITWA.

Durant quatre ans, des représentants wayana et apalaï sont venus étudier les collections et les enregistrements de leur culture conservés respectivement au musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, au Musée des cultures guyanaises et au Laboratoire d’ethnologie et de sociologie comparative (Nanterre).

Ce projet voulu par les Wayana et Apalaï avait comme objectifs de connaître les objets et enregistrements collectés dans le passé et conservés à Paris, loin de chez eux, de trouver un outil à partir de ces connaissances du passé pour transmettre aux plus jeunes des savoirs qui sont en train de disparaître. Cet outil prend la forme d’un portail numérique, Watau, visible depuis ce mois-ci : www.watau.fr.

Pour cela, une méthodologie spécifique a été établie en respectant pensées et langues wayana et apalaï. Chaque étape a fait émerger des questionnements sur un ensemble de sujets : métalangage informatique qu’il a fallu traduire dans les deux langues, faisant naître de nouveaux mots, classification des collections en fonction des catégories propres aux wayana et apalaï, traduction des appellations des objets de musées, choix visuels des pages du portail répondant aux codes esthétiques du Haut Maroni, ergonomie et appropriation du portail par les Wayana et Apalaï.

Le lancement du portail et cette exposition auront lieu dans le Haut Maroni du 12 janvier au 25 janvier 2020.

Exhibition: Watau, the paths of memory

From 12 to 25 January in the towns of Upper Maroni

Between 12 and 24 January 2020, a traveling exhibition on panels in Wayana and French produced by the museum of Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac in partnership with the museum of Guianese cultures, will present the SAWA project and the Watau portal in Upper Maroni : Watau.fr

Entitled "WATAU. EITOPONPË EHEMA, Wayana me, Apalai me eitop internet jau / WATAU, the paths of memory, A website for the Wayana and Apalai ”, the exhibition is made up of 17 panels, divided into three sections which present both the project SAWA and the portal, objects from the two museums, and the great eputop ritual (maraké in French).

The police station is ensured by Mataliwa Kuliyaman, Tasikale Alupki, Ikale Asaukili, Pekijem Kulitaike, Yamo Kutaka, Akayuli Palanaiwa; the scientific advisers are Fabienne de Pierrebourg (museum of Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac) and Marie-Paule Jean-Louis.

The SAWA project, Indigenous waysana and apalai knowledge (2016 - 2019) was carried out within the framework of the Labex The past in the present. It is led by the Laboratory of Ethnology and Comparative Sociology (CNRS and University Paris - Nanterre) and the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac. It also benefited from the support of the Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Guyana, the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana, the general delegation for the French language and the languages ​​of France, the Ministry of Overseas, of "the association for the intercultural dialogue: research and action ”, and of the association AGITWA.

For four years, Wayana and Apalai representatives came to study the collections and records of their culture kept respectively at the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, the Musée des cultures guyanaises and the Laboratory of ethnology and comparative sociology (Nanterre).

This project wanted by the Wayana and Apalaï had as objectives to know the objects and recordings collected in the past and kept in Paris, far from home, to find a tool from this knowledge of the past to transmit to the youngest of the knowledge which are disappearing. This tool takes the form of a digital portal, Watau, visible since this month: www.watau.fr.

For this, a specific methodology has been established respecting Wayana and Apalai thoughts and languages. Each step raised questions on a set of subjects: computer metalanguage which had to be translated into the two languages, giving birth to new words, classification of collections according to the categories specific to Wayana and Apalai, translation of the names of objects museums, visual choices of portal pages that meet the aesthetic codes of Upper Maroni, ergonomics and appropriation of the portal by Wayana and Apalaï.

The portal launch and this exhibition will take place in Upper Maroni from January 12 to January 25, 2020.
