Papaïchton : Un sentier aux six sens inauguré le 31 août

Dans le cadre des célébrations des 50 ans de la commune de Papaïchton, du 28 août au 1er septembre, le Parc amazonien de Guyane et la mairie vont procéder à l’inauguration du sentier La Source, samedi 31 août à partir de 11 heures.

Historique et contexte

Capitale du Pays boni, Papaïchton possède un important potentiel écotouristique : des paysages uniques comme les Abattis Cottica, des écosystèmes variés et un patrimoine culturel très riche.

Le projet du sentier La Source est né en 2010 d’une volonté conjointe de l’ancienne équipe municipale et du Parc amazonien de Guyane de créer un sentier de proximité dans la même dynamique que ceux existants à Saül. L’équipe actuelle arrivée début 2014 souhaitait, elle aussi, poursuivre ce projet et s’inscrire dans une démarche d’écotourisme afin de protéger et valoriser son patrimoine tout en générant une activité économique durable sur son territoire.

Une première phase (tranche 1 : de 2011 à 2013) a consisté à aménager la boucle du sentier, tandis que la seconde phase (tranche 2 : de 2015-2019) a permis de valoriser cette boucle au travers d’un parcours thématique réalisé avec les collégiens de la commune. Il est préconisé à terme, une troisième phase (tranche 3) ayant pour objectif de réaliser des
extensions du sentier sur la Montagne Couronnée et l’ancienne scierie.

Arbres remarquables et découvertes naturelles

En forêt, le sentier La Source permet de découvrir différentes formations végétales : le sentier passe successivement par de la forêt secondaire et primaire, riche en essences de valeur botanique et patrimoniale, avec un beau point de vue sur Papaïchton et le fleuve.

De multiples essences d’arbres sont présentes sur le sentier. Dont notamment le Manmantin (Balata franc), « ramasser très tôt » : les fruits pourrissent en une journée lorsqu’ils tombent. L’Ebène rose ou l’Ebène verte, l’Acajou de Guyane, le Sède (bois précieux utilisé pour la fabrication de cercueils ou de tambours), ou encore le bois de Fer. Chaque essence a une
fonction bien précise pour ceux qui connaissent la forêt, comme le Bagasse, arbre sacré pour les Aluku. Dans la tradition palikur, la consommation de l’eau macérée dans ses feuilles favoriserait la rencontre avec le jaguar...

Des bornes « 6 sens » et des panneaux d’information conçus par les collégiens

De 2015 à 2019, les élèves des classes de 3ème et de 4ème du collège Charles-Tafanier de Papaïchton ont travaillé sur la manière d’enrichir ce sentier avec leurs professeurs, des animateurs du Parc amazonien et le scénographe David Tardy.
Ils se sont accordés pour favoriser une découverte sensorielle de cet environnement préservé. Ainsi, six bornes « 6 sens » ont été conçues et installées tout au long du sentier. Ces bornes permettent de mettre en éveil l’un ou l’autre de nos sens, par le biais de petits défis en lien avec le milieu forestier.

Les collégiens ont également souhaité intégrer à ce parcours en pleine nature des informations davantage liées à l’histoire et à la culture de la communauté aluku. Pour ce faire, ils sont allés à la rencontre des anciens de Papaïchton pour leur demander des informations sur le passé de la commune. Ils ont ensuite déterminé neuf points d’intérêt dans la commune
devant lesquels des panneaux d’information ont été installés.

L’ensemble de l’interprétation de ce sentier a été ainsi été orientée vers la pédagogie de projet avec les élèves. Elle a été réalisée grâce à un subtil mélange de terrain et de travail en salle.
C’est une pédagogie participative : le projet est l’œuvre, les porteurs de projet sont les apprenants, ceux qui façonnent l’œuvre.

Ce projet a permis de mettre en valeur des atouts essentiels :

Thématiser le sentier afin d’en faire une clé d’entrée culturelle, artistique et historique dans le monde aluku, ce qui constitue en soi un élément majeur d’attractivité.
Mettre à disposition des élèves (collège et écoles primaires) un outil pédagogique permettant une découverte attrayante de la forêt (animations autour des sens).

De nouveaux sentiers pourraient être créés afin de relier les différents espaces culturels et naturels de la commune : ancien Papaïchton, bord du fleuve, liaison avec Loka et Boniville, sentier urbain de découverte du patrimoine, sentier aux Abattis Cottica...

Papaïchton: A path to the six senses inaugurated on August 31

As part of the celebrations of 50 years of the town of Papaïchton, from August 28 to September 1, the Amazon Park of Guyana and the town hall will proceed to the inauguration of the trail The Source, Saturday, August 31 from 11 am.

History and context

Capital of the Pays boni, Papaïchton has great ecotourism potential: unique landscapes such as Abattis Cottica, varied ecosystems and a rich cultural heritage.

The project of the trail The Source was born in 2010 from a joint desire of the former municipal team and the Amazonian Park of Guyana to create a path of proximity in the same dynamic as those existing in Saul. The current team arrived in early 2014 also wanted to continue this project and to be part of an ecotourism approach to protect and enhance its heritage while generating a sustainable economic activity on its territory.

A first phase (slice 1: from 2011 to 2013) consisted of developing the trail loop, while the second phase (slice 2: from 2015-2019) made it possible to enhance this loop through a thematic route realized with the college students of the commune. It is recommended in the long term, a third phase (tranche 3) aimed at achieving
extensions of the trail on Crown Mountain and the old sawmill.

Remarkable trees and natural discoveries

In the forest, the trail The Source allows to discover different plant formations: the trail passes successively by secondary and primary forest, rich in species of botanical value and heritage, with a beautiful view of Papaïchton and the river.

Multiple species of trees are present on the trail. Including the Manmantin (Balata franc), "pick up very early": fruits rot in a day when they fall. Pink ebony or green Ebony, Mahogany from Guyana, Sede (precious wood used for the manufacture of coffins or drums), or even the wood of Iron. Every essence has a
a very precise function for those who know the forest, such as Bagasse, sacred tree for the Aluku. In the tradition palikur, the consumption of macerated water in its leaves would favor the meeting with the jaguar ...

6-way terminals and information boards designed by the students

From 2015 to 2019, students in the 3rd and 4th grades of Charles-Tafanier College in Papaïchton worked on how to enrich this path with their teachers, the organizers of the Parc amazonien and the scenographer David Tardy.
They agreed to promote a sensory discovery of this preserved environment. Six "6-way" bollards have been designed and installed along the trail. These kiosks are used to awaken one or the other of our senses, through small challenges related to the forest environment.

The students also wanted to integrate into this course in the wilderness information more related to the history and culture of the Aluku community. To do this, they went to meet the elders of Papaïchton to ask them for information on the past of the town. They then determined nine points of interest in the municipality
in front of which information boards were installed.

The entire interpretation of this path has been oriented towards project pedagogy with students. It was made thanks to a subtle mixture of ground and work in the room.
It is a participative pedagogy: the project is the work, the project leaders are the learners, the ones who shape the work.

This project has highlighted key assets:

Thematizing the path to make it a key cultural, artistic and historical entry into the world aluku, which in itself constitutes a major element of attractiveness.
Provide students (middle school and primary schools) with an educational tool allowing an attractive discovery of the forest (animations around the senses).

New trails could be created to link the different cultural and natural spaces of the town: old Papaïchton, river, link with Loka and Boniville, urban heritage discovery trail, trail to Abattis Cottica ...
