Rodolphe ALEXANDRE, President of the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana, reacted to the news of the capsizing of a pirogue on the Maroni river at Apagui.

This accident affects the municipality of Grand Santi, which now has to deal with the disappearance of one of its inhabitants.

According to initial information, the canoe, when it capsized, was heading for Saint-Laurent du Maroni with several people on board who had to continue their care or medical follow-up on the coast. One of the passengers, a young woman eight months pregnant, is currently missing.

I express my deep compassion and give my support to all the inhabitants of the municipality as well as to the rescue teams.

This tragedy reminds us cruelly of the difficulties encountered on a daily basis by our compatriots in isolated communities, difficulties linked in particular to the isolation and the complexity of access to healthcare in our territory.

More than ever, the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana is working in favor of all its populations in order to offer them an adapted offer of care and work for a better network of the territory in terms of health, social and health services. "
