Twenty Guianese health professionals have worked over the past three months with the Canadians of Sciences Mag Junior, with the National Education and the Canopé network to design a magazine and an educational game for the youngest. Children will have to manage the fight against Covid-19, based on reliable scientific information. The magazine and the game will start testing next week, before their wider distribution starting in September.

Prof. Félix Djossou (Umit, CHC), Dr Dominique Rousset (Institut Pasteur), Dr Thierry Carage (Carage laboratory, Kourou), Prof. Pierre Couppié (dermatologist, CHC), Dr Stanley Caroll (general practitioner, Cayenne) , Dr Fabien Sublet (pharmacist, Matoury), engineer Damien Brelivet (head of the health and environment service at ARS)… Twenty-two Guyanese health professionals have lent their features to the designers of Sciences Mag Junior. In this magazine, which begins distribution to schools in French Guiana today, they answer children's questions about Covid-19. And in particular twist the blow to many fake news: how do variants appear? How to destroy the virus? Is there a danger in wearing the mask? How many people can I infect? How long do you keep your antibodies? How long does it take to design a vaccine? To promote its use by children, this magazine (here, an unfinished version) is accompanied by an escape game, designed by the Canopé network. The children's mission: to manage the Covid crisis unit in place of Clara de Bort, the general manager of ARS French Guiana suddenly being held up by a meeting with the minister and the prefect. For an hour, they will have to answer questions from the general public, health professionals, react to different situations ...

This is not the first time that French Guiana has cooperated with the Canadians of Sciences Mag Junior. A first Guianese version of their magazine on Covid-19 was published at the start of the epidemic. Four pages had been adapted to the Guyanese context. This time, out of the 68 pages, 40 pages are Guyanese. Since March, around thirty Guyanese health professionals have worked to adapt their knowledge of the coronavirus to all age groups. Dr Claude Flamand (epidemiologist, Institut Pasteur de Guyane) coordinated their work, helping to popularize knowledge ... The result is a magazine whose content may be of interest to both young people, from elementary school, college students and also their parents. But a magazine is good, but it's not everything!

We had printed the first magazine in 3000 copies. We distributed it to schools. But during its evaluation, we realized that it had often been read, but little used," recalls Nicolas Wiedner-Papin, academic director of the Canopé network. At the beginning of March, it brought together people who had the first magazine in their hands, whether they work for National Education, in the extracurricular or in associations. This is where the idea of an escape game emerged. “The magazine is 68 pages long. In an hour, children cannot take it in hand and assimilate such complex content, notes Nicolas Wiedner-Papin. The escape game helps overcome the fear of the written word by playing with the magazine." The set, adapted from the magazine and designed for the escape game, was funded by the Regional Health Agency.

For an hour, the children will therefore receive audio calls, video calls, SMS, messages on Whatsapp and will have to answer them. To do this, they will rely on clues crept in throughout the magazine. When the adults return, they will have a final challenge. If successful, they can leave with a copy of the magazine. The goal is therefore that after the game, children "want to read it, to open it up as a family, based on scientifically correct information".
