From September 19 to 22, 2022, the Group for the Study and Protection of Birds in French Guiana (GEPOG) welcomed around sixty participants, in Cayenne, on the occasion of a technical seminar organized as part of the European project Life BIODIV'OM. This seminar focused on the theme of participatory approaches in the service of biodiversity conservation through territorial dialogue, citizen mobilization and participatory science. It was organized around plenary sessions, workshops and field visits.
Information to remember:
In order to protect the savannahs of French Guiana, GEPOG has organized 4 consultation workshops since 2018 with the aim of co-drafting two management documents against two invasive plant species:
a regional Niaouli control strategy and an Acacia mangium control plan.
GEPOG also conducted more than thirty surveys of professional fishermen and recreational boaters before organizing 4 consultation workshops in 2021 and 2022. Led by GRAINE Guyana and the company DialTer, these workshops made it possible to define, with recreational fishermen, socio-professionals, scientists or State services, proposals or courses of action to implement sustainable management of the Giant Grouper and make certain fishing activities sustainable.
In Reunion, the Society for Ornithological Studies of Reunion (SEOR) carries out participatory rat extermination projects each year with the aim of preserving the habitat of the Tuit-tuit from rats, predators of the species. With more than 150 volunteers each year, these sites control rats on nearly 1200 hectares, allowing the population to increase from 6 known pairs in 2003 to 52 pairs in 2022.
In Martinique, the Regional Natural Park (PNRM) is taking a similar approach to protect the White-throated Thrasher. To date, nearly forty people are registered with the Brigade Moqueur. The devices installed have already captured nearly 128 rats and 68 mongooses.
As part of a previous project coordinated by the LPO, the LIFE+ CAP DOM, three participatory portals have been deployed in order to accumulate naturalist data and thus improve the protection of species in Overseas France: Faune-Guyane, Fauna-Reunion and Fauna-Martinique. With more than 1,600 registered observers, Faune-Guyane crossed the one million observation mark in 2022. In 2022, two new platforms will be created as part of LIFE BIODIV’OM: Faune-Mayotte and Faune-Antilles.
In order to promote the actions of the LIFE BIODIV’OM project, GEPOG organized two days of field visits. The participants were thus able to discover different Guyanese savannahs, the path of the savannahs in Sinnamary and the management actions implemented against Niaouli and Acacia mangium.
Also, a visit to the National Nature Reserve of the Ile du Grand-Connétable, allowed participants to discover the history of this island, its avifauna and the various management actions deployed to promote the six nesting species but also the actions put in place for giant grouper in French Guiana.
