Concert: "The People's Orchestra of French Guiana"

Saturday February 5 at 7 p.m. at Encre, Cayenne

Price 20 euros

Tickets on sale at l'Encre on digital terminals and on www.troisfleuves.fr

The People's Orchestra of French Guiana in 2019 demonstrated its very promising future through its concept and above all the talent displayed by its 30 musicians gathered together, saw its momentum broken due to the health crisis which did not allow to continue the projects that OPG's management team was developing.

This musical formation was born in 2018 from an observation, on the one hand the existence of an abundance of Guianese musical talents that deserved to be brought together and, on the other hand, an important heritage to be valued. It was therefore necessary to create spaces of excellence so that these talents could express themselves in front of the public. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to bring these components together within a professional structure. Thus was born the “popular orchestra of French Guiana”, an unprecedented project in French Guiana.

Bringing together so many artists, a challenge

From the first concert, the public is under the spell, and adheres to this ambitious concept which brings together musicians, soloists, composers and conductors.

The direction of the Orchestra is ensured by Thierry Vaton, who shares the artistic direction with Pierre-Marie Levaillant, pianist and Franck Bilot, clarinetist who both ensure the coordination. The orchestra consists of four trumpeters, two clarinetists, four trombonists, two flautists and six saxophonists, four singers. A piano, bass, guitar, drums, vibraphone and marimba rhythm section accompanies the ensemble with, of course, Guianese tambouyens (Creoles, Amerindians, busi kondé sama) as well as Afro-Caribbean percussions. About thirty musicians who constitute a permanent base.

On Saturday February 6, the group will perform some of the Guyanese standards arranged for big band jazz, now included in its repertoire, such as Un soir à Copacabana / Arsène Popo Senior; French Guiana pou levé / Daniel Sinaï - Germain Barbe, Obaniso - Josy Masse, Neg rot bo krik - Jean Mariema and many others like Edgard Nibul, Christiane Taubira, Maximilien Saba…

A concert that will also celebrate the memory of its godfather Yvan Rollus who passed away on January 31, 2021.
